Meeting Details for May 10, 2006

The May meeting of UsabilityNJ will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at Pershing Technologies in Edison, NJ (click for directions). Social hour starting at 6:30 PM. Presentation starting at 7:00 PM.

Topic: UPA Publication Strategy: Online vs. Print
Speakers: Alice Preston & Susan Fowler

Please RSVP to rsvp [at] usabilitynj [dot] org if you plan to attend the meeting.

Talk Summary

UPA has three periodicals: User Experience Magazine (a print quarterly), the Journal of Usability Studies (an online quarterly) and the Voice (an online bi-monthly newsletter). Each of the three has a different approach and tone, but all three are dealing with issues of value vs. time-to-publication.

Come share with us your take on the approaches underway, and your opinions on the future of these publications. Do you hold onto articles to use later? Would you like to be able to find UPA articles online at your public library? Is the PDF format a good one? What about webcasts, podcasts, sound files, extra resources? Should we give up editors and paper, and switch to blogs and wikis?

Speaker Bios

  • Alice Preston
Alice has spent many years working on paper publications as author, editor, and publisher, including the award winning newsletter for the STC Usability and User Experience SIG. Later, she was responsible for various aspects of taking those same publications into the electronic age, dealing with the problems of making a paper document available on the Web in multiple formats within the same time frame, and with the same limited budget of volunteer time.
  • Susan Fowler
Susan has an extended history of working in the commercial magazine publishing world, as well as being an avid scholar and researcher who greatly appreciates online resources and knows how to make tremendous use of them. More recently, Susan has become very interested in how we move from paper-only publications into publications that will have a longer shelf life. With Victor Stanwick, Susan is the author of three software design books, the latest of which is Web Application Design Handbook from Morgan Kaufmann.

In 2005, Susan and Alice received the UPA’s Usability Service Award for their energy and professionalism in their work as Managing Editors of the UPA User Experience magazine.
