Meeting Details for February 8, 2006

The February meeting of UsabilityNJ will be held starting at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at Pershing Technologies in Edison, NJ

Topic: Usability Award at Lucent Technologies: A Case Study
Speaker: Cheryl Coyle

Talk Summary

In a usability nirvana, everyone (not just the usability experts) should be able to provide an answer to the question: What makes your product usable? In reality, however, most people answer that question with a list of features instead of explaining how the product design was focused on users and their tasks. How can we teach our non-usability-expert colleagues what usability is and why it is important to think about it while designing a product or service?

Promoting usability in a corporation is always a challenge. To raise awareness about the value of usability, Lucent's Usability Special Interest Group (USIG) had a marvelous idea.

Speaker

  • Cheryl Coyle, Lucent Technologies
Cheryl is a Technical Manger of Human Factors at Lucent Technologies and will present a case study of the 2005 USIG Usability Award. She will describe the processes of a successful award project (corporate communication, nomination, judging, and final presentation of nominees), as well as the lessons learned from the case study.
